What is a RSS Feed?
Many websites have links labeled "XML" or "RSS" or "Atom". All of these are ways of saying that you can find out about updates to that site without having to visit the site in your web browser.
This feature is referred to as "syndication" or "aggregation". Sometimes it's just called subscribing. And these days, instead of one of these words, lots of sites will use a little orange button. The standard one looks like this:
It's also common to see buttons that say "RSS" or "XML", which looks like this: ![]()
All these links and buttons mean the same thing: The site you're viewing has a feed available.
How can I grab and use these RSS feeds?
Simple if you’re using Microsoft’s IE7 browser or FireFox 1.5 - 2.0 the ability is built in.
To use our RSS feed in IE7:
When you are at a website that offers an RSS feed, Internet Explorer's RSS button will light up bright orange. To see what the RSS feed will look like and to subscribe, click on the orange button.
Click "Subscribe to this feed"
Click on "Subscribe"
IE7 will show you a preview of what the RSS feed will look like. AT the top of the screen is the option to go ahead and subscribe to the feed. Click on this link.
A new window will pop-up allowing you to name this feed and place it in a folder if you wish. Click on "Subscribe" to finish. You're DONE!
To use our feed in FireFox 1.5 – 2.0:
Subscribing to an RSS web feed is as simple as creating a so called Live Bookmark. And to make life even easier Firefox can auto detect some feeds, and provide a shortcut for subscribing.
When you visit a site and you see the orange icon in the bottom right part of the Mozilla Firefox browser window (the status bar), or if you are using version 1.5 or newer, in the right most part of the address bar.
You can add the feed(s) by clicking the orange icon and subscribing to one. If there is more then one RSS feed, Firefox shows a list from which you can pick one. You're DONE!
The Add Bookmark (Add Live Bookmark for 1.5 and newer) dialog appears and you can add the Live Bookmark.
